What about Egypt? Discussion of Informed Scholars on the Present and Future of Egyptian Politics
Presented by the Yale Council for Middle East Studies
Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to protest against president Mohamed Morsi and his government on the 30th of June 2013. Scholars and analysts have since differed on the conceptualization of what happened and what continues to unfold. The difficulty to access the field and collect evidence is making the ideological, political and socioeconomic landscapes more conceptually confusing. This workshop aims to offer an in-depth analysis of politics in Egypt. It invites Egyptian scholars who have witnessed and participated in those landscapes to reflect on the concepts used to frame what is currently happening, based on evidence they were able to collect in their own respective fields. The workshop neither seeks to commend nor condemn but invites participants to read the present and contemplate the future.
