Nakba Commemoration: The Evolving Musical Narrative

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Foty Fusion, a Palestinian-American group will commemorate this year’s anniversary of the Nakba through a musical performance and visual presentation highlighting the historical significance of a series of songs.
Over the past 67 years, Palestinian resistance music has continued to evolve by navigating and redefining itself in different cultural spaces in the diaspora. In positioning these songs within their historical context, this presentation will seek to illustrate how the Nakba musical narrative has changed over time and how it must consistently redefine itself in the face of Israeli military occupation. As Israeli colonization has persisted and entered a new and perhaps more brutal phase, the need to resist through music has gained a growing significance. Understanding the history of Palestinian resistance music and its evolution will bring to light the ongoing Nakba musical narrative. The chosen themes of the evening will reflect on Palestinian history and the struggle for self determination as well as symbolism and the resurfacing of old ideologies in present day music.
Foty Fusion is a Palestinian-American family band, comprised of a father, Fuad Foty (oud), and his five children, Cherine (violin), Ziad (piano), Fairouz (cello), Nadine (flute), and Yasmine (guitar).
