LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) will present an interdisciplinary artistic and academic program entitled Beyond Sacred: Unthinking Muslim Identity for the entirety of its 2014-15 season. Beyond Sacred kicks off with a community forum on 9/11 and culminates with a new production in collaboration with Ping Chong + Company’s (PCC) Undesirable Elements Series.

The Goal
Beyond Sacred’s goal is to create a cohesive cultural program that illuminates life experiences of culturally identified Muslims in 21st century, post 9/11 New York City, and results in greater understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim communities in NYC. More…
Community Forums
Utilizing theater to stimulate group talk, New York Theatre of the Oppressed trained actors and mentors will work with LAGCC Humanities students to create a safe haven for 5 community discussions.
“Call to Discussion” Series
The “Call to Discussion” Series examines Islamic culture from a wide range of perspectives. These academic led conversations explore gender in Islam; Islamic identity in post 9/11 America; terminology; and a variety of specific issues and taboos affecting this community.
