CMES Cinema: ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD
Presented by the Yale Council for Middle East Studies
Russian-born, Israeli journalist Lia Tarachansky looks at Israelis’ collective denial of the fateful events of 1948 when the state of Israel was born and most of the Palestinians became refugees. She follows the transformation of Israeli veterans as they struggle through their denial of their role in the war that changed the region forever. Tarachansky then turns the camera on herself and travels back to the West Bank settlement where she grew up, and where the collective amnesia of the war events has given birth to a new generation, blind to, and isolated from its surroundings. Attempting to shed a light on the nation’s biggest taboo, she is met with outrage and violence. Since premiering in Tel Aviv in 2013, her film sparked important conversations in Israel and abroad.
