The affordances of citizenship are bound in many ways to structures of governance that provide and at the same time deny access to power. While formal structures of governance establish rights and responsibilities, there are many additional forms of governance people use to orchestrate and affirm their community membership, among them are civic organizations, community groups, and NGOs. The 2015 annual conference will explore the many dimensions of the theme of governance and citizenship.
More information can be found at our website.
The 2015 keynote speaker is Frederick Cooper, Professor of History at NYU.
Professor Cooper’s field of study is Africa and his areas of research include: modern Africa, empires in world history, colonization and decolonization, and the social sciences and the colonial situation.
We will also be joined by Juan Cole, author of “The New Arabs: How the Millennial Generation is Changing the Middle East”
FAQs
3-Day vs. Single Day tickets…
We expect all presenters to attend the whole conference. Single day tickets are for non-presenters seeking to spend the day with us to see a particular presentation.
Ticket Valid for what time period?
Tickets are valid for the entire three-day conference unless single day ticket is purchased.
When does the Early Bird Discount Expire?
The Early Bird Discount expires on January 16, 2015 at 11:30 p.m. After that registration will cost $90.00 for Graduate Students and $175 for Faculty and Professionals. Registration fees cover the cost of lunches & coffee (Thursday-Saturday), printing, technology, and venue fees.
What is the Optional Friday Night at the DIA Event?
The optional Friday night event will be a visit to the Detroit Institute of Art where we shall eat dinner in the cafeteria, roam the museum or sit and reflect whilst listening to some jazz. We need to gauge attendence to let the DIA know how many of us to expect. You will be responsible for all costs which will include your meal and an $8 museum entrance fee.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the conference?
The closest parking lot to the McGregor Memorial Conference Center is Lot 31. Parking is $7 and you will need a credit/debit card for entry and exit.
The conference hotel, The Inn on Ferry, will provide a shuttle to and from the university for conference attendees. Just call them. Otherwise, the hotel is within walking distance from the university
If you choose to stay at an area hotel other than the Inn on Ferry you will have to call a cab!
Where do I make my hotel reservation?
Go to the Center’s website where you will find a link to the Conference Hotel and the group code to get special conference pricing: www.clas.wayne.edu/citizenship
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Questions should be directed to Helen Callow at citizenship@wayne.edu.
With regard to lunches…
You will be unable to register for the conference without first providing your lunch choices. There are 4 options: a vegan/Gluten free, veggie, meat and a no lunch option. If you know that you will not be joining the conference group for lunch please let us know. Previous conferences saw an awful lot of food waste that we would like to avoid in 2015. Select lunch choices via the registration form.
With regard to AV equipment…
We will do our best to accommodate AV requests. It is exceedingly costly to provide AV, so please request sparingly! Request AV equipment via the registration form.
With regard to moderator duties…
If you would like to serve as a panel session moderator, please sign up via the registration form. Moderator duties consist of reading panel session papers ahead of time (3-4 person panels), help load powerpoints ahead of your session, keeping panelists to time, and being prepared with a couple of questions for panelists to ensure the Q&A goes to plan.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, but your confirmation page will show lunch choices, AV needs, if you volunteered to moderate and if you signed up for the Friday evening event, so it might not be a bad idea.
What is the refund policy?
Contact us for a refund by February 1, 2015.
