Zakat Foundation Executive Director in Haiti Coordinating Earthquake Relief Efforts
The Zakat Foundation of America, a non-profit organization based in Illinois, has pledged $50,000 towards immediate relief efforts in Haiti where a major earthquake struck Tuesday, January 12. Zakat Foundation Executive Director, Halil Demir, is currently in Haiti coordinating initial relief efforts.
Since Haiti’s airport is operating at maximum capacity with relief planes bottlenecked and Haitians trying to leave, Zakat Foundation is trucking relief supplies from the Dominican Republic in order to reach earthquake victims as quickly as possible. The first trucks to cross the border over the weekend brought relief supplies such as food, water, and medical supplies.
Zakat Foundation is committed to immediate relief and to the long-term rehabilitation efforts to follow. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Haiti does not have the proper infrastructure to respond to such a disaster.
The Zakat Foundation urges everyone to take part in this relief effort. A donation of $100 will provide a food package, including rice, flour, black beans, cooking oil, sardines, and water, for one family for one week. Please act today!
The Zakat Foundation, which has been in operation since November 2001, runs both domestic and international projects, and fosters charitable giving to offer relief, and development to those in need.
