Syria Medical Crisis Relief Efforts to Be Held at the Suburban Collection Showplace

posted on: Mar 31, 2012

The Syrian American Medical Society of Michigan (SAMS-MI) will host its Syria 911: Medical Crisis fundraiser on Saturday, April 14, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at the Suburban Collection Showplace. The fundraiser will be held in an effort to boost awareness of the medical crisis that is plaguing the country of Syria, and to raise funds to purchase vital medical supplies for clinics that offer medical treatment to severely injured civilians.

Due to daily violence and on-going attacks, doctors and health care personals are struggling to provide proper medical care to civilians that are suffering from life threatening wounds; and the medical staff are also being targeted for simply trying to care for the injured. “In the past year, approximately 10,870 Syrians have been killed, and more than 35,000 have been injured. The medical staff in Syria are in desperate need of our help in saving the innocent victims of this humanitarian crisis,” said Dr. Opada Alzohaili, president of SAMS-MI. “Thousands of injured people could easily be treated and saved throughout the country, but the doctors do not have the means of doing so.” For this reason, the Syrian American Medical Society have launched a national and global program called the “Save Syrian Lives Campaign.” This new campaign will coordinate efforts to distribute donations, medical equipment, and medications to areas in dire need of the supplies within Syria, as well as the borders of neighboring countries.

Now more than ever, the medical staff providing medical care to Syrians in the troubled country requires help from all humanitarians, community partners and the government. Join SAMS-MI during its Syria 911: Medical Crisis fundraiser, which is part of the “Save Syrian Lives Campaign,” all proceeds raised will help alleviate Syria’s medical crisis. The event will include keynote speakers Dr. Reza Nassiri, director of Institute of International Medicine, Michigan State University, Dr. Randy Hillard, professor of Psychiatry, Michigan State University and Dr. Robert Rutha Simon, founder and Chairman of the board of the International Medical Corps (IMC).

Due to limited seating, on-line registration will be required. On-line registration is $100 per person and $125 at the door; $50 per medical student/resident and $60 at the door; $20 per child and $25 at the door for on-site child care.
