PLO Delegation Commemorates 39th Anniversary of Palestinian Land Day – Youm Al Ard
The General Delegation of the PLO to the US joins the Palestinian people in Palestine and in the Diaspora in commemorating Land Day.
On March 30, 1976, Israel announced plans to expropriate over 10,000 acres of land from Palestinian villages in the Galilee area. Palestinians nonviolently protested the decision, voicing their strong opposition to Israel’s illegal expansionist practices. Despite their civil demonstrations, Israeli forces killed six Palestinians, injured hundreds, and arrested many others. Today, 39 years later, we remember this tragic event as Land Day.
During the four decades since 1976, Israel expanded its policy of confiscating Palestinian land to the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. Its settlement activity continues unabated, each year with graver implications on the prospects of peace in our region.
On this day, the Delegation condemns in particular Israel’s plans to construct 143 illegal units in the Jabal Abu Ghneim illegal settlement of Har Homa. Today, Israel’s policy of land-theft is particularly prominent in occupied East Jerusalem, where land is being expropriated in order to provide space for the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements.
As we commemorate this occasion, the General Delegation of the PLO to the United States salutes the Palestinian people for their steadfastness and unwavering commitment to their land and inalienable rights to independence and self-determination. We reaffirm once again that the roots of our people in this land run so deep and that no occupying power will manage to break our ties to our land.
