New Book-Popular Proverbs: An Entrance to Palestinian Culture
A new book by Dr. Nasser M. Isleem aims to promote knowledge and understanding through increased awareness of some of the deep-seated values, traditions and beliefs transmitted through Palestinian language and culture. Popular Proverbs: An Entrance to Palestinian Culture is an exploration of over one thousand proverbs, sayings and aphorisms that provide an important reflection of the culture that produced them.
“Popular Proverbs includes traditional stories and cultural references that will hit home with Palestinians and other Arabs living in the United States,” says Dr. Isleem. “Ensuring the continuation of this important cultural tradition will help pass on many time-honored customs and values to future generations while encouraging better cultural understanding for all.”
Each proverb is presented in Arabic with its corresponding transliteration, translation and English equivalent. Following each proverb is a detailed description of how the proverbs are used in Palestinian culture as well as an exploration of their origin, relevance in present-day society and related stories of interest.
