NAANA: Building Cultural Bridges in Health Care: Strength in Diversity

The Inaugural Convention of the National American Arab Nurses Association (NAANA) at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center on Thursday and Friday, October 9 and 10, 2008, will feature keynote addresses and 20 concurrent sessions from internationally renowned experts in various healthcare disciplines.

The keynote speakers include:

· Gottfried Oosterwal, PhD, LittD,a renowned expert on the subject of micro-inequities in the healthcare setting and adjunct professor of Global Health in the School of Public Health at Loma Linda University (CA) (Micro-Inequities in the Healthcare Setting)

· Nena Peragallo, DrPH, RN, FAAN, Dean and Professor School of Nursing & Health Studies, Miami University (Healthcare Research among Diverse Communities)

· Kimberlydawn Wisdom, M.D., MS, Michigan Surgeon General,Vice President, Community Health, Education and Wellness at Henry Ford Health System, and Director of the Institute of Multicultural Health at Henry Ford Health System (Journey to Cultural Competence)

· Donna Skurzak, MA, LSW, CDP Director of Diversity Programs & Regional Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic (The Foundation of Cross-Cultural Communication)

· Larry Purnell, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor of Nursing, University of Delaware (Organizational Cultural Competence) and

· Adawele Troutman, MD, MPH, Director, Louisville (KY) Public Health and Wellness (Tackling Health Inequities: A Team Approach)

The convention, themed “Building Cultural Bridges in Health Care: Strength in Diversity,” is expected to attract some 600 to 800 health administrators; physicians; residents; medical students; nurses; student nurses; social workers; speech, physical, and occupational therapists; human resource professionals; hospital chaplains; educators; researchers; pharmacists; and other key healthcare professionals.

Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center will grant the CEUs (10-12 hours pending approval).

Don’t miss the opportunity to attend the Friday afternoon session on pain management, which is required for Michigan RN license renewal.
Continuing Medical Education Credit (CME) is provided by the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA). NAAMA designates this continuing medical education activity for up to 10 credit hours in Category I of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

All convention attendees, sponsors and exhibitors are invited to attend free of charge “Health Coverage in America: Understanding the Issues and Proposed Solutions: A Health Summit on the Uninsured” on Thursday, October 9th, cosponsored by NAANA and the Michigan Cover the Uninsured Network. The event will begin with a sit-down dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by an hour-long program. Seats are limited to 200.
