Judge McCarthy Selected as Chairwoman of ACRL Justice Committee
The Arab-American Civil Rights League is proud to announce that we have launched the ACRL Justice Committee as the newest addition to our rapidly growing organization. The Justice Committee will host an annual justice awards ceremony to celebrate those in the judicial and legal field who have shown commitment to ensuring the rights of all, under the law, and who work to improve and empower their communities. We have selected the esteemed Judge Kathleen McCarthy to serve as Chairwoman of the newly formed Justice Committee.
Judge McCarthy has been a member of the Wayne County (Michigan) Circuit Court Family Bench since 2001 and as of 2013, she is the Presiding Judge of that division. In her position, she is responsible for 850 active cases concerning divorce, child custody, paternity, and child support, in addition to about 25,000 post judgment cases, as well as helping to manage the 250 employees at the Wayne County Friend of the Court. Since 2011, Judge McCarthy has taught Family Law at the University Detroit Mercy Law School. A life-long resident of the Detroit area, Judge McCarthy attended the University of Michigan and Detroit College of Law.
Judge McCarthy is an active speaker, having presented at IDFA conferences since 2001. She has also been a guest speaker for the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, as well as for local organizations and schools. She is past president of the Dearborn Bar Association, Wayne County Family Law Bar associate, Advisory Chair of ADC Michigan, and board member of the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers.
We look forward to starting this initiative as we believe that it is imperative to acknowledge the work that is being done to progress civil rights within our communities, and trust that Judge McCarthy is the perfect person to head the Committee.
