ISNA President Calls for Muslim Action on President-Elect Obama's National Day of Service

posted on: Jan 11, 2009

The Islamic Society of North America announces a collaborative effort with the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) for the 2009 National Day of Service on Monday, January 19th.

This coming January 19th holds special significance for America not only because it commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s legacy but also a great step towards the realization of his dream of racial equality. We encourage you to participate in this new initiative with PIC and ISNA as partners in civic service.

We are asking you to commit to holding a service event on January 19th with ISNA. Your local organization will be featured on the official inauguration website. Events will be nationally advertised and will provide clear testament to the civic involvement of American Muslims. The nature of the events is service oriented: for example, gathering a group to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, raising funds for shelters, holding free health screenings, outreach and education about community issues, etc. We urge you to plan activities relevant to your local community.

For your organization to have its event uploaded onto the website, kindly send the following information to Somayyah Ghariani (sghariani@isna.net) by Monday January 12, 2009:

* Event title
* Event description
* Time and length of event
* Location name
* Mailing address
* Contact name and number
* Anticipated number of volunteers

Though time is short, the amount of good that can be accomplished is, God willing, significant. We hope you will join us.

If you have further questions or need clarification, please e-mail to sghariani@isna.net or call the ISNA Office of Interfaith and Community Alliances at (202) 544-5656.
