Awni Farhat, a refugee living in Jabalia Camp on the Gaza Strip, aims to raise a total of £25,000 to cover the cost of studying for a Masters in Violence Conflict and Development at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
In a video which has been viewed some 3,500 times, Farhat says his goal is to “return to Palestine with the knowledge I need to make a difference”.
Farhat is the Products and Endorsements Coordinator for the Gaza’s Arkproject, an international campaign challenging the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip, and worked with children as a volunteer in UN schools during last year’s conflict.
“In the past 25 years I have lived through many extreme and life-threatening experiences which have affected and shaped my character, as well as influencing my aspirations for the future,” he said.
“I believe that studying at SOAS will help me to explore the root causes of injustice and conflict, both in my country and across the world,” he continued. “I think this would enable me to focus my efforts in a more effective manner and to educate others how to do the same.”
