Halal Meals on Wheels Available for Seniors
ACCESS’ Social Services Department and the Senior Alliance Area Agency on Aging 1-C have been working together to offer Halal Meals on Wheels to Muslim senior citizens. “ACCESS is trying to create an awareness in the senior community of the services available to them, keeping in mind the cultural sensitivity factor,” says Social Services Director Amne Talab, who is an appointed State Commissioner on Services to the Aging. She held meetings with area senior citizens to better understand their nutritional needs.
“The Senior Alliance was instrumental in identifying the funding for this unique program and helping us identify a company to provide the Halal food.” The meals come from Midamar, a Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based company that was the first company in the U.S. to work with the USDA to develop an accredited Halal food program. The food is delivered to people ages 60 and older who qualify for the guidelines and who live in Allen Park, Belleville, Brownstown Township, Canton Township, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Garden City, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile Township, Huron Township, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Livonia, Melvindale, Northville, Northville Township, Plymouth, Plymouth Township, Redford Township, River Rouge, Riverview, Romulus, Southgate, Sumpter Township, Taylor, Trenton, Van Buren Township, Wayne, Westland, Woodhaven and Wyandotte. Seniors don’t have to pay for the meals but are encouraged to make a donation if possible. To see the list of qualification requirements, click on www.aaa1c.org/consumers/resource11.htm#Section2a.
