SUMMARY:US Policy and Diplomacy in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:NEW JERSEY\n\nChanging Lanes: Turkey and the Crisis in the Mid
dle East\nSponsored by Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility (Cam
den County College) and the Middle East Center (University of Pennsylvania
 )\n&nbsp\;\nPresenter: Dr. Mehmet Darakcioglu\, Associate Director\, Unive
rsity of Pennsylvania's Middle East Center\nLocation: Civic Hall\, Connect
or Building\, Blackwood Campus\, Camden County College\nMehmet Darakcioglu
\, Associate Director of the University of Penn’s Middle East Center\, w
ill discuss how the Republic of Turkey\, founded after the collapse of the
Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I\, adopted a cautious approach in
its foreign policy to steer clear of regional or global conflicts. Atatur
k\, the founder of modern Turkey\, summarized this policy in his famous qu
ote as: “peace at home\, peace in the world.” Though one can debate ho
w successful Turkey was in living up to this ideal\, it has adopted a non-
interventionist foreign policy with some exceptions and aligned with the W
estern world as a NATO member since the beginning of the Cold War. Turkey
began to follow a more proactive foreign policy under the ruling Justice a
nd Development Party (JDP) in the past decade and took a keen interest in
the affairs of the Arab Middle East. Though Turkey’s projection of soft
power initially yielded successful results the country finds itself embroi
led in serious regional problems related to Syria and to the rise of ISIS.
This talk will analyze how Turkish foreign policy continues to evolve in
the face of the continuing crisis in the Middle East.\n\nApart from the on
going academic lectures and programs at the Middle East Center\, this six-
part lecture series at the Camden County College is part of Center’s com
munity college outreach initiatives. Our past programs with the Camden Cou
nty College included topics such as arts\, history\, culture\, and religio
n in the Middle East.\n\nIt is free and open to public. NJ Professional D
evelopment Credits (CEU) are available for educators.\n
