 since the first of the Arab uprisings broke out in Tunisia and three years
  since James L. Gelvin wrote the first edition of The Arab Uprisings.  In
  their discussion\, Profs. Gelvin and Gana will explore not only the traje
 ctories of the uprisings in the past four years and the prospects for a "n
 ew Middle East\," but the difficulties and rewards of writing "contemporar
 y history\," and the role of the public historian.\n\nJames L. Gelvin is P
 rofessor of Modern Middle Eastern History at the University of California\
 , Los Angeles. He received his B.A. from Columbia University\, his Master'
 s in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Aff
 airs at Columbia University\, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He ha
 s taught at Boston College\, Harvard University\, MIT\, and the American U
 niversity in Beirut.\n\nNouri Gana is Associate Professor of Comparative L
 iterature &amp\; Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of 
 California\, Los Angeles. He published numerous articles and chapters on t
 he literatures and cultures of the Arab world and its diasporas in such sc
 holarly venues as Comparative Literature Studies\, PMLA\, Public Culture a
 nd Social Text.\n\n
