SUMMARY:“Sexualities and Queer Imaginaries in the Middle East\,”
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Middle East Studies and co-sponsored by Middle Eas
t Studies\, Open Society Foundations\, Brown University’s Gender and Se
 xuality Studies\, Brown’s Pembroke Center\, Brown’s LGBTQ Center\, Bro
wn’s Sarah Doyle Women’s Center  and the Watson Institute for Interna
tional Studies at Brown.\n\nBrown University’s Middle East Studies will
be hosting the third annual “Engaged Scholarship” conference on April
10-11\, 2015\, with the theme of “Sexualities and Queer Imaginaries in t
he Middle East.” The 2014 theme was “Embedded! Archeologists and Anth
ropologists in Modern Landscapes of Conflict” and the 2013 theme was
“The Politics and Ethics of Knowledge Production.”\n\nThe primary o
bjective is to bring together a diverse group of experts from the Middle E
ast and around the world (academics\, journalists\, activists\, human righ
 ts advocates\, filmmakers\, novelists\, faith-based leaders\, and others)
who have contributed to either the representations of or on-the-ground dev
elopment of lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ) movements in th
e Middle East.\n\nTo our knowledge\, this is the first of such gatherings
to take place\, connecting academics and practitioners between those based
in North America\, Europe\, and those in the Middle East. The four centra
l questions animating the conference will be as follows:\n• What is the
ethical role that academics of queer social movements in the Middle East c
an play in supporting rather than undermining their development?\n• How
does that role differ from those contributing to these movements through g
rassroots activism\, civil society engagement\, contestation with the stat
 e\, advocacy within national\, regional\, and international institutions\,
and those approaching queer representation within the arts sphere?\n• H
ow can we characterize the past\, present\, and future trajectories of var
ious queer movements in the Middle East/North Africa region?\n• How can
we bridge the binaries between East and West as well as the binaries betwe
en movements in the “social” realm and those in the “political” re
 alm?\n
