SUMMARY:Artful Reading Adventures at the MFA (3 programs)
DESCRIPTION:Reading Adventures provides opportunities for children and teen
s to connect with the art and cultures of Asia\, Africa\, Europe\, and the
Americas through engagement with the MFA collections. Teachers\, parents\
, and group leaders work closely with Museum instructors to design customi
zed visits that fit the interests and needs of their group. Tours are spec
ifically designed around the images\, stories\, and themes found in books.
Each visit lasts an hour and a half and combines a gallery tour with an a
rt-making activity.\n\n\n\n\nI have set up three programs for different ag
es/levels. There is some flexibility here\, so if you feel your child woul
d benefit from a different age level/program/interest\, please feel free t
o use your own discretion when registering.\n\n\n\n\nThere is a limit on C
haperones for this program. For now\, I have put 4 chaperones with 10 stud
ents. If we go over 10 students in each category\, I will open up more spa
ces for both.\n\n\n\n\nGrades K-3: Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile by Tomie
  dePaola (Ancient Egypt)\n\nBook Description:It's a new school year\, and
Bill and Pete are back in a new adventure. Their teacher\, Ms. Ibis\, is t
aking all the little crocodiles (and their toothbrushes) on a class trip t
o the Royal Museum. But who's that trying to steal the Sacred Eye of Isis?
Can it be the Bad Guy? Can Bill and Pete save the day once more?\n\n\n\n\
nProgram Description: The Art and Mysteries of Ancient Egypt: Unlock the m
ysteries of ancient Egypt and hear about daily life in this amazing civili

n\n\nGrades 4-7: D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths by Ingri &amp\; Edgar Par
in d'Aulaire (Ancient Greece)\n\nBook Description: No education is complet
e without a large slice of Greek mythology. And there's no better way of m
eeting that literary quota than with the D'Aulaires' book. All the great g
ods and goddesses of ancient Greece are depicted in this big\, beautiful c
lassic\, lovingly illustrated and skillfully told. Young readers will be d
azzled by mighty Zeus\, lord of the universe\; stirred by elegant Athena\,
goddess of wisdom\; intimidated by powerful Hera\, queen of Olympus\; and
chilled by moody Poseidon\, ruler of the sea. These often impetuous immor
tals flounce and frolic\, get indiscreet\, and get even. From petty squabb
les to heroic deeds\, their actions cover the range of godly--and mortal--
personalities.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Description:This book includes popular myt
hs surrounding the pantheon of Greek gods and goddesses. At the Museum chi
ldren can see mythology depicted in ancient Greek and Roman vases\, statue
s\, and other works of art.Art Activity (One of the following TBA) Clay\,

Chaperones free\n\nGrades 8+: Monkey: Folk Novel of China (aka Journey to
the West) (Ancient China)\n\nBook Description: Probably the most popular
book in the history of the Far East\, this classic sixteenth century novel
is a combination of picaresque novel and folk epic that mixes satire\, al
legory\, and history into a rollicking adventure. It is the story of the r
oguish Monkey and his encounters with major and minor spirits\, gods\, dem
 igods\, demons\, ogres\, monsters\, and fairies. This translation\, by the
distinguished scholar Arthur Waley\, is the first accurate English versio
n\; it makes available to the Western reader a faithful reproduction of th
e spirit and meaning of the original.\n\n\nProgram Description: Walk throu
gh a Chinese house and a Buddhist Temple Room\, learn about impressive god
s and goddesses\, and take a closer look at scroll paintings.Art Activity
