SUMMARY:Adventures in Field-Building: On the History of Middle East Studies
  in the United States
DESCRIPTION:CALIFORNIA\nAdventures in Field-Building: On the History of Mid
dle East Studies in the United States\nA lecture by Zachary Lockman\, Midd
le Eastern and Islamic Studies\, New York University\nSponsored by the UCL
 A Center for Near Eastern Studies\nTuesday\, April 14\, 2015\n3:00 PM\n103
83 Bunche Hall\nUCLA\nArea studies is often simplistically depicted as lit
tle more than a Cold War form of knowledge\, but its emergence as a compon
ent of the postwar academic scene was in fact propelled and shaped by visi
ons\, exigencies and contingencies that were not initially or exclusively
about the needs of the national security state. Drawing on extensive resea
rch in the archives of the big foundations\, academic organizations like t
he SSRC and the ACLS\, various universities\, etc.\, Zachary Lockman exp
lores how the field of Middle East studies in the United States actually g
ot built in the postwar period\, with a focus not on intellectual paradigm
s but on funding decisions and their rationales\, efforts to elaborate and
implement a theory and method for area studies\, the development of what
he terms the field's infrastructure and (not least) the anxieties that a
lways accompanied the building of what was initially imagined as a new kin
d of academic field.\n\nZachary Lockman\, from the Department of Middle E
astern and Islamic Studies\, and the Department of History\, New York Univ
ersity\, focuses his research and teaching field on the socioeconomic\,
cultural and political history of the modern Middle East\, particularly t
 he Mashriq.\n\n
