  Awards Gala
DESCRIPTION:DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we get ready to cele
 brate the Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala\, we devote part
  of our schedule to advocacy days at the White House and on the Hill. Thes
 e annual leadership days have become an important opportunity for the Arab
  American community to come together and make our collective voice heard o
 n key policy priorities. Given the seriousness of the political challenges
  we are facing today—from profiling to surveillance to an increase in ha
 te speech and hate crimes—our domestic priorities remain paramount to th
 e well-being of our community and our country. On foreign policy\, you wat
 ched as we did just last week\, a foreign leader\, Prime Minister Benjamin
  Netanyahu\, criticize American foreign policy and perpetuate bigoted lang
 uage about Arabs from the hallowed rostrum of the U.S. House chamber.  We
  need you with us more than ever.\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nOn the Hill and at the W
 hite House you will hear more about Palestine\, Syria\, and other foreign 
 policy priorities. You will also hear from the Department of Justice an up
 date on the revised December 2014 DOJ Guidance for Federal Law Enforcement
  Agencies on the Use of Race\, Ethnicity\, National Origin\, Religion and 
 other factors. Even with the December revisions\, we believe they failed 
 to significantly improve the discriminatory practice of profiling. We cont
 inue to press the Obama adminstration to do more and ask that you to help 
 us in April.\nAs a special component of our annual leadership days\, we're
  excited to announce that we will host a private advance screening on Apri
 l 30 forKahlil Gibran's The Prophet\, followed by a discussion with Salma 
 Hayek Pinault. Inspired by the classic book by Kahlil Gibran\, the film po
 rtrays the story of an unlikely friendship between a young girl and an imp
 risoned poet. The film presents the 26 poems from Gibran’s work in a col
 lection of eight animated “chapters” by animation directors from aroun
 d the world.  Adapted for the screen by Roger Allers (The Lion King)\;and
  produced by 2015 Spirit of Humanity Awardee Salma Hayek Pinault\, the f
 ilm premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival last spring. Kahl
 il Gibran's The Prophet was recently picked up by GKids\, the distributor
  of six Academy Award nominated animated films\, and will be released to N
 orth American audiences this summer but you can watch it with Salma before
  then. However\, seating is limited for this special screening\, please re
