Detroit Area Palestinian-Americans Hold Press Conference Commemorating the 60th Year of Al-Nakba May 14th

The Palestine Office-Michigan with support of the Arab-American community will hold a press conference in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Al-Nakba at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Dearborn City Hall on Michigan Ave.
Testimony of direct experiences during the Nakba by Detroiters will be shared, and the names of 531 villages and towns depopulated and destroyed, as well as their original population figures, will be read in solemn observance. Religious and community leaders will participate. Sixty balloons will be released as a symbolic gesture of Palestinians’ resilience and yearning for freedom and return.
The 60th anniversary of the Nakba for U.S. Palestinians during the “celebration of Israeli independence” by fellow citizens, celebrates the ruins of Palestinian villages and towns, dismemberment and mass dispossession of an entire community.
It should also be noted that the Al-Nakba 60 Committee is organizing a major event in the Arab American community to commemorate the Al-Nakba on Saturday, May24th, 6pm at the Dearborn Community & Performing Arts Center. Over 1,000 people are expected to attend.
