The Archbishop of Jerusalem, His Eminence, Metropolitan Theodosios ‘Atallah’ Hanna from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem will be in Detroit this weekend to attend the Ramallah National Convention.

Born Atallah Hanna in Rameh in the Upper Galilee, Archbishop Atallah Hanna was elected in 2005 by the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem as Bishop of Sebaste.

He is the first Palestinian to be so honored. Highly educated and acknowledged, he has served as the patriarchate’s delegate at the Geneva-based World Council of Churches and has participated in many international conferences in which he has given detailed accounts on the suffering and human rights violations inflicted on the Palestinian people.

He is a major participant in the Catholic-Islamic dialogue in Palestine and has acted as an eloquent and tireless advocate for the Palestinians and for the preservation of Christianity in the Holy Land.

This past spring the bishop made international headlines by his refusal to attend an event with President George W. Bush in the Church of the Nativity to protest U.S. policy.

Archbishop Attallah Hanna will preside over divine liturgy this Sunday at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church. There will be a brunch immediately following the liturgy.

On Wednesday, July 2nd, the Ramallah Federation is hosting a lunch in honor of Archbishop Atallah at St. Mary’s Cultural Center beginning at 12:00 Noon. Tickets for the luncheon are $25.00 per person and can be purchased at St. Mary’s Church office.

Thursday, July 3rd, His Eminence will be speaking at the Ramallah Federation Convention at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn at 2:00. This event is open to the public.
