Andre Sayegh Could Become the First Arab American Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey

posted on: Mar 20, 2014

As current City Council President, Andre has a record of sensible leadership and if elected, he will become the first Arab American mayor of Paterson. The polls show that Andre is a frontrunner in a contentious race, but he needs our community’s support to pull ahead.

As you may know, Paterson holds national significance for our community because of the role Arab Americans played in helping propel longtime friend and ally Congressman Bill Pascrell to victory during a special election primary in 2012. Today, Andre’s bid for Mayor is even clearer evidence that our community in New Jersey is capable of coming together and organizing around a candidate. It also shows that, when necessary, our community has the capacity to stave off attacks from those who would vilify Arab American political participation and run a candidate that is both qualified for the job—and proud of his heritage!

Back in 2012, Andre was interviewed after the Pascrell election. “On June 5th a resounding message was sent: we’re Arab, we’re American, and we matter,” he said. Sayegh’s acumen and commitment to protecting and mobilizing our community then is an embodiment of the service he will bring to representing all his constituents in Paterson as Mayor.

So far the polling shows Sayegh in a head-to-head race with former Paterson Mayor Jose “Joey” Torres, but Sayegh’s favorable/unfavorable ratings are far ahead of the competition (57%/12% vs. Torres’s 48%/41%). As we said, this is a race we can win.
