ACCESS names Director of Communications and Marketing
Last month, ACCESS named Rana Abbas as its Director of Communications and Marketing. Rana joined ACCESS in November 2013 and has over 15 years of community service and communications experience. She has served as the Interim Director of the Communications and Marketing Department for the last year. In her capacity, she oversees all internal and external communications for ACCESS and works to ensure that the agency’s vision and mission are articulated properly.
Prior to her work with ACCESS, Rana served as the Director of Corporate Communications for a government contractor in Washington, DC. She was also the Deputy Director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee’s (ADC) Michigan Office, from 2000-2008.
Rana served as a commissioner, appointed by the Governor of the State of Michigan, to the State’s Women’s Commission, from 2006-2011. She was also a member of the Governor’s Council on Arab and Chaldean American Affairs in the State of Michigan, from August 2004-July 2007. In addition, she has served on a number of community boards throughout her career, including New Detroit’s Immigration Task Force, Advocates for Police and Community Trust (ALPACT), the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes (MIAAHC), the Center for Arab American Studies (CAAS) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, the Media Empowerment Project (MEP) and the Community Advisory Panel for Detroit Public Television.
In 2004, Rana led a first-of-its-kind delegation of American women to the Middle East to work on establishing a network that would enhance opportunities for education and employment for women in the Middle East and the U.S. That visit served as a catalyst for the work that she continues to do today on issues that are relevant to women throughout the U.S. and the world.
Rana is a Graduate of “High Distinction” from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a graduate of the Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
