ADC Statement on Tenth Anniversay of 9/11
As we observe the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we are reminded of the tragic moments that indelibly marked September 11, 2001 in our minds. We also remember the dire social and legal ramifications that characterized the immediate aftermath of that day. The surge in violent hate crimes and various forms of discrimination individuals endured both resulted from and exacerbated a growing climate of fear. And in the era of the War on Terror, many were stunned to find America’s foundational principles of democracy being compromised.
Today, we emerge from the decade after 9/11, urging our leadership to reaffirm America’s commitment to human rights and civil liberties, and to once again make it the nation’s greatest strength. Only with unwavering adherence to this historical commitment can America maintain the elements of freedom that have always been essential to its foundation.
As Americans, we all wish to keep our nation safe. It is vital that our safety does not come at the expense of our freedoms and liberty. Moving forward, we encourage open and respectful dialogue between communities and individuals. Together, we can make the next ten years a truer reflection of the America we all love and to which we are dedicated.
