Patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad B Twal, to Visit Michigan

The Arab American Catholic Community, in the State of Michigan, is proud to announce that his Beatitude Fouad B Twal, Patriarch of Jerusalem, will pay a visit to our community, as his last stop while touring various U.S. Cities, beginning September 7th through September 25th.The community will welcome his Beatitude during a reception in Southfield, Michigan.

His Beatitude, Fouad Twal, is the second Arab Patriarch of the Holy land to be appointed by His Holiness, Pope Benedict xvi, back in June 2008. While in 1987, Michel Sabah was the first Arab Palestinian appointed to become the Latin Patriarch. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem is now the Diocesan Bishop of Latin Catholic of the Archdiocese of Jerusalem and has jurisdiction over Latin Rite Catholics in Israel, Palestine, Cyprus and Jordan.

His Beatitude Fouad Twal Was born in Madaba, Jordan, and was ordained to the priesthood in June 1966. He served as a priest in the City of Ramallah, Palestine for six years .In 1972, he attended the pontifical Lateran University in Rome , Italy, where he studied Canon Law, and was awarded a Doctorate Degree in 1975.He was appointed as the Prelate of the territorial prelature of Tunis by Pope John Paul, the Second, on May 30th, 1992. He was consecrated to the episcopate on July 22, the same year. In 1995, he became the Archbishop of the Country of Tunis. In the year 2005, Pope Benedict xvi named him the coadjutor Archbishop of Jerusalem. While in Michigan, Patriarch Twal will be meeting with Archbishop of Detroit, His Beatitude Allen Henry Vigneron, as well as , Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim, of the Chaldean churches in North America and Canada.

At the conclusion of the official enthronement, at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, in 2008, Patriarch Twal stated, “Freedom of movement for priests and religious leaders between these regions is a primary pastoral concern.” “It’s time to put an end to the wall,… to checkpoints,…and to establish Palestinian State. And finally, it’s time to end our problems with visas.”

During his visit to the United States, His Beatitude Fouad Twal will be accompanied by Father Emile Salaita, President of Latin Patriarchate ECC Court, located in Jerusalem.
