Arab American National Museum Offers Free Sunmmer Camps for Children

Seeking for entertaining yet constructive summer activities for your child? The Arab American National Museum (AANM) has limited openings in two summer camp programs for middle school students. Both camps are free and open to the public; parents are urged to register their child as soon as possible in order to ensure a spot.

Students entering grades six through eight are invited to participate in the SURA Arts Academy Summer Camp at the Arab American National Museum and various locations Monday, June 23 through Saturday, June 28. College-level and professional instructors teach kids how to use a digital camera and how to visually explore issues of diversity and community.

Participants get the use of a digital camera during the camp, free field trips including transportation and free breakfast and lunch. SURA Arts Academy is one of 50 semifinalists for the 2008 Coming Up Taller awards presented by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities The Coming Up Taller awards recognize the best American arts- and humanities-based programs that serve children beyond school hours.

SURA Arts Academy is funded by The Skillman Foundation, U.S. Department of State and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A few openings also remain for sixth through eighth graders in the CU.SAME Summer Camp, now in its third year. >From Monday, July 14 through Thursday, July 17, participants tour the Arab American National Museum, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and Shalom Street Jewish Children’s Museum and explore the various cultures represented at these institutions as well as larger issues of diversity and community. Exciting culminating activities are held at The Henry Ford.
