Yemeni Americans Stand in Solidarity With the People of Yemen
The Yemeni American community here is watching with great concern the rapid developments unfolding in Yemen as Yemenis take their struggle for democracy to a higher level.
For the last several weeks, hundreds of thousands of Yemenis have been demonstrating in the streets across the country demanding a change in the current regime. This has been met with defiance and deadly force from the current President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Saleh has been ruling Yemen with an iron hand for more than three decades. His government is accused of dictatorship and corruption, driving Yemen to the brink of civil war.
The Yemeni American community, and the larger Arab American community in Metro Detroit, express their solidarity with the people of Yemen as they revolt against the totalitarian regime of Saleh and seek freedom, justice and equality.
“We condemn the deadly attacks by the government’s security forces against unarmed protesters in Sanaa and Aden and all across the country, which have claimed the lives of dozens of demonstrators and injured hundreds,” said Dr. Dahan Alnajjar, chairman of the Yemeni Coalition to Support the Revolution.
“Today we join millions of Yemenis around the world and inside the country of Yemen from all walks of life, as the revolution moves closer to declaring another victory against tyranny and dictatorship and adding Yemen to Egypt and Tunisia as free and democratic nations,” Dahan added.
“We ask President Obama to stand firmly against this violence and unequivocally support the Yemeni people as they seek freedom and democracy,” said Ali Baleed, a local Yemeni activist.
The coalition is demanding that President Saleh step down immediately and allow an orderly transition to a democratic form of government.
There are tens of thousands of Yemeni Americans living in Southeast Michigan, a large number of them live in Dearborn and Hamtramck, where thousands of Yemeni Americans live.
