Hosni Mubarak Has Resigned
Hosni Mubarak’s rule of Egypt, one of the longest in the Middle East, has come to an end as a result of unprecedented protests in the streets featuring Egyptians of all ages.
After the assassination of President Anwar El-Sadat, on October 14th, 1981, Mubarak assumed the Presidency and has held the title of president until his resignation today. His thirty year rule represented corruption, economic stagnation, and crushing authoritarianism.
On January 25th, 2011, an uprising of Egyptians erupted calling for his resignation as president. Egyptian protests continued to grow despite overdue concessions that he will not seek another term, dismissing his government, and appointing a vice president.
The announcement came from his appointed vice president Omar Suleiman, saying Mubarak has transferred power to the military.
