Arab American Civil Rights League Remembers Dr. Martin Luther King

posted on: Jan 20, 2014

On Behalf of the Arab American Civil Rights League- ACRL we stand united in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

As we pay tribute to the iconic civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, we are reminded of the struggle for equality that is far from over. Dr. King was much more than a civil rights champion – he was an individual who devoted his life in support of others, speaking out against injustice and demanding equality for all not based on the color of your skin or creed but rather on the character of an individual. Kings Message was one that caused a stir and at times viewed as controversial, but Dr. King knew the cause was a great one that cannot be set aside.

As Arab Americans, we value and cherish the legacy of Dr. King as it he has paved away for an avenue towards establishing fair and equal justice system. In 2011-13, we have witnessed attempts by presidential candidates to use ugly stereotypes of Arab/Muslims Americans to advance their political agenda and divide our country. Diversionary tactics such as these are nothing more than a smoke screen and the Americans people are insulted by these discriminatory campaigns.

Dr. King knew the road towards equality would be a long and challenging but that the rewards will be worthwhile. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” Perhaps quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is cliché, but we believe it bears repeating at times like these when candidates and elected officials are exploiting cultural and racial differences to draw votes. Arab Americans will never apologies for our diversity because it is this very diversity which built this great nation.
