Free Craft Sundays takes place from 2-4 p.m. in the Lower Level Classroom at the AANM. All children taking part in Free Craft Sundays must be accompanied by a parent; no admission fee is charged. An RSVP is required; contact Lindsay Robillard at 313.624.0210 or lrobillard@accesscommunity.org.
2012 Fall Free Craft Sundays for ages 6-12
September 23: Navajo-Inspired Weaving
Kids will learn about the centuries-old tradition of Navajo weaving in the Southwestern United States and learn to make a small version of their own using a cardboard loom.
September 30: Curlicue Critters
Paper arts are nearly as old as the invention of paper (2nd century B.C.E. in China). From ancient ceremonial Japanese origami (6th century C.E.) and the geometric paper crafts Arab-Muslims brought to Spain (11th century C.E.) to the animal scenes we will make during this session, paper crafts have been and continue to be an important part of humanity’s artistic heritage.
October 7: Bean Leaves
Fall into the autumnal spirit by making mosaic-style leaves out of hearty fall foods – legumes! We will be using staple beans from around the world to mimic the local foliage of oaks and maples.
October 14: Halloween Decorations
Get pumped for Halloween with these festive three-dimensional paper pumpkins. Before pumpkin Jack O’Lanterns became symbols of Halloween, people carved faces into turnips.
Free Craft Sundays is made possible in part by Blake & Brady Hishmeh and Blick Art Materials.
