ADC and ATFL Hosting Amy Joseph Documentary Photography Exhibit
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) and the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL) are pleased to host a photography exhibit by Ms. Amy Joseph. The “From Brummana to Birmingham: A Lebanese American Family” exhibit is a documentary photography project depicting every-day life of Arab Americans and contains 27 photographs and five accompanying text panels.
The exhibit is on display at ADC National Headquarters- Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal Heritage Center Gallery and a reception will be held Tuesday, April 22 at 7:30pm to kick off the exhibit. The exhibit will remain on display until mid-May. To view the exhibit, please contact Ms. Joseph at 571-263-2073 or amy@amyjoseph.com
Joseph’s work focuses on her family, of Lebanese origin. Although the photographs reflect her family today, Joseph describes her project as, “the base of a broader project about people from throughout the Middle East and North Africa.” Her photographs depict ordinary life for Arab Americans, which she hopes to encourage individuals “to see into people’s lives and see people as who they are and not who the stereotypes decide they are.”
An experienced photographer, Joseph’s work has been exhibited in North Carolina in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh and in Norfolk, Virginia. Last summer Joseph returned to the Washington DC area to focus on this documentary project about Arab Americans.
Joseph graduated from James Madison University in 1999 with a degree from the School of Media Arts and Design, with a concentration in print journalism. In 2001, she moved to Carrboro, North Carolina, to study at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. For her project for the Certificate in Documentary Studies, which she completed in June 2003, she photographed at SeeSaw Studio, an after-school program for Durham high school students to learn about design and business. She has also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York City and the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport, Maine.
