Life Team Distributing Food Inside Haiti
For the past week, a team of aid workers from Life for Relief and Development has been working on the ground in Haiti to provide relief to victims of the recent earthquake that rocked the impoverished Caribbean nation.
The team entered the country from the Dominican Republic last week with a 53 ft. truck full of food and drinks for distribution in the capital of Port-au-Prince.
They first arrived at an orphanage that houses 150 children who are infected by the HIV virus. There was a shortage of almost every supply at the facility.
The Life team immediately distributed aid to the staff and children inside the orphanage, leaving them with several days’ worth of food and drink.
Another shipment of food arrived in Haiti on Saturday, and two more trucks full of food and water are expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 26th.
A portion of the food that is brought into the country by Life is being used to make 10,000 hot meals a day. The meals are prepared by members of the Haitian-Muslim community and are distributed on a first-come first-serve basis to those in need.
The rest of the food that is trucked in by Life is distributed to individuals from a makeshift distribution center set up on a basketball court.
In addition to its work on the ground, Life has also shipped two 40 ft. containers full of medical supplies, clothes, and other relief items from Southfield, MI to Haiti.
Six more containers are scheduled to leave Cleveland, OH on Tuesday, January 26th. The containers leaving from Cleveland include:
52 pallets of water
At least 3 pallets of diapers
At least 1 pallet of baby formula
3 pallets of baby wipes
2 pallets of nutritional supplements
(Pedialyte, Ensure, etc…)
10 pallets of new wheelchairs
14 pallets of new walkers
2 pallets of sleeping bags
2 pallets of blankets
1 pallet of tents
1 pallet of feminine hygiene products
At least 4 pallets of crutches
Four more containers of medicine and medical supplies are scheduled to be shipped next week.
Life’s efforts in Haiti have been made possible through a partnerships with many organizations, such as the UAE-based Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Charity Organization (MBRC), which has donated $1.25 million to the relief effort.
MBRC, along with the UAE Red Crescent Society have also deployed a relief team to Haiti that has joined Life’s team in the field to distribute aid to earthquake survivors.
