Miss Arab USA will be Crowned in Arizona
Contestants from across the country hope to become a national representative for Arab-American women in the Miss Arab USA 2012 pageant tonight at Talking Stick Resort and Casino.
The 19 women will compete in four categories: casual wear, formal wear, a group dance and a national custom dress category.
“We want to present Arab women in the right way. These women are strong leaders and a model of the present Arab woman,” said Ashraf Elgamal, executive director of the Miss Arab USA 2012 pageant.
The national dress portion replaces the traditional swimsuit category that many pageants have and instead allows the women to dress in a custom outfit that represents the different Arab countries.
Elgamal said the Arab American Association, the non-profit that has hosted the event since it began in 2010, hopes to dispel stereotypes.
“There is so much stereotype of the Arab community,” Elgamal said. “The most important thing in this pageant is to promote the culture of the Arab community and educate the country about the Arab culture.”
During the days leading up to the pageant, contestants attend classes that educate them about their heritage, Elgamal said.
The judges are looking for someone who is well-educated, knows how to work in a team environment and has knowledge of the culture.
“If they win, the next year of their life will change,” Elgamal said.
Last year’s winner, Christina Rafidia of Illinois, has had the chance to visit Army troops and children’s hospitals, and was recently invited to the White House, Elgamal said.
The pageant begins at 8 p.m. at Talking Stick Resort and Casino, 9800 E. Indian Bend Road, near Loop 101, on the Salt River Reservation.
Tickets are $35 online and $50 at the door.
After the crowning, the public will get get the chance to meet the new Miss Arab USA 2012 at a red carpet event beginning at 11 p.m.
