Hamtramck Welcomes Muralist Dasic Fernandez, Fri. Nov. 8th
OneHamtramck LLC and Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) are hosting a Welcome Party for Chilean muralist Dasic Fernandez who will be in town painting Michigan’s first outdoor Arab mural in Hamtramck throughout November.
The Welcome Party will take place Friday, Nov. 8th at 6 pm at the Peoples Community Services, 8625 Jos. Campau in Hamtramck. This FREE event will offer the opportunity to meet the artist and learn about the project.
There will also be a screening of Bomb It, the acclaimed documentary about graffiti art, on Sunday, Nov 10th at 6 pm at the Hamtramck Pubic Library, 2360 Caniff, where Dasic Fernandez will be a guest speaker.
The OneHamtramck Arab Mural Project will visually represent the longstanding Arab community and its culture, and is a gift to the people of Hamtramck. The mural will bring national attention to one of the most diverse cities in the country, and showcase the positive role Arabs have played in American life. It will help develop a better understanding and respect for one of the many ethnic groups making this city their home. Bill Meyer, Executive Director of OneHamtramck reminds residents, “by elevating a segment of Hamtramck society, the whole community benefits. The subject may be Arab culture and history but the artwork is for everyone.”
Dasic Fernandez is a rising star in the world of mural painting. Although he is Chilean he has been studying Arab art and design and is anxious to test his talents on the rich history and culture of the Yemeni Arab Americans. His work can be seen on his blog here. His vibrant colorful style, often featuring super-realistic faces has been praised around the world. The Detroit area has been fortunate to host a few of his paintings, mostly in SW Detroit – the farmer with an outstretched hand holding a corncob is on W. Vernor near Livernois.
Dasic will begin painting Monday, Nov 4th on the 80 ft x 16 ft wall of the Sheeba Restaurant at 8752 Jos. Campau, and welcomes the public to view the mural in progress.
OneHamtramck LLC was formed in 2011 and initiated its campaign to help bring together the diverse communities in Hamtramck through culture, with an original film/music performance called The Home Suite by Bill Meyer, featuring the Hamtramck World Music Ensemble.
