Shatila Bakery Owner Remembered for His Humility, Kindness
Riad Shatila opened his first bakery in a small storefront on Schaefer near Warren some 35 years ago. The founder of the Shatila Bakery would see his business grow to the point where he shipped his famous sweets all over the world. But longtime friends say that success didn’t change him.
Mr. Shatila died Sept. 6 after a long battle with cancer. Visitation is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 7 at the Islamic Center of America, 19500 Ford Road, but the time had not been finalized late Friday. Call the mosque at 1-313-593-0000 for more information.
“His success was phenomenal,” said Dearborn Councilwoman Suzanne Sareini, his friend for 40 years. “But that never changed him. He was just as kind as ever. He was always, always, always a gentleman, always generous to the community. It’s a tremendous loss to the community.”
As the business grew, Mr. Shatila moved his bakery to a larger facility at 14300 W. Warren Ave. He also owned a factory at 8505 W. Warren Ave. where his famous baklava and other products were made.
Survivors include his wife, Zeinat, and three daughters, Nada, Tania and Batoule.
