ACRL And Civil Rights Groups Form A Coalition To End
ACRL along with National Action Network (NAN), American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Council on American-Islamic Relation (CAIR), and Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality held a press conference yesterday, September 5th, 2013 at the ACLU office in Detroit to announce their investigation regarding the two think tanks hired by the Detroit Police Department to train their patrol officers the “Stop and Frisk” way of policing. Although “Stop and Frisk” is constitutional, the groups believe the way its enforced is unconstitutional. According to recent news stories, this practice of policing does not allow police officers to follow, stop, or question a person out on the street. In some incident, these stops have escalated to violence and arrests for no apparent reason.
These two training groups have documented history of failed police training. The same organizations that are here to improve Detroit Police Department, have already tried and failed with the New York Police Department. If these polices become law in the City of Detroit, not only Detroit residents will be affected, but any individual that works, drives through, or visits Detroit will be subjected to such stops.
