Laila Bugaighia a first hand account of the situation in Libya.

Join us for an exclusive evening with Dr. Laila Bugaighis for a conversation on

“THE FIGHT FOR LIBYA’S FUTURE”

The University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies hosts Dr. Laila Bugaighis for a conversation on the future of Libya.  An eyewitness to the struggle, Dr. Bugaighis will provide a first-hand account of the current situation and offer her thoughts onthe future of the country.

Dr. Bugaighis is a cousin to Salwa Bugaighis, a tireless and passionate human rights lawyer and activist killed by militants in June 2014, and a friend to J. Christopher Stevens, the former U.S. Ambassador to Libya killed in Benghazi in September 2012.  This event also provides an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of Salwa and Chris – both with strong ties to the University of Washington and Seattle – and the countless others who have lost their lives in this struggle.

Dr. Anne Stevens, a pediatric rheumatologist at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the sister of Ambassador Chris Stevens, will offer a personal introduction.

About Dr. Laila Bugaighis

Dr. Laila Bugaighis is a leader in healthcare reform and human rights advocacy in Libya.  She is CEO and Deputy Director General of the Benghazi Medical Center, a member of the Scientific Committee for Reproductive Health of Libya, and a member of the Libyan-EU initiative for healthcare systems reform.

Dr. Bugaighis is also the founder of the National Protection Against Violence Committee, which aims to implement a comprehensive program for gender-based violence in Libya, and the co-founder of Al Tawafuk Al Watani, a political NGO working to raise awareness about democracy, inclusivity, social justice, human rights and cultural reform.

This event is co-sponsored by the Jackson School of International Studies and the Master’s in Applied International Studies program.
