Arab American and Chaldean Council Building 48 Homes in Detroit
The Arab American and Chaldean Council (ACC) is partnering with Penrose Village II to build 48 single-family homes and apartments along the Seven Mile corridor between Woodward Avenue and John R Street.
The new residences will be for low-income Detroiters and those with special needs, as part of what the ACC calls The Seven Mile Project.
The homes will be a combination of two-bedroom duplexes, three-bedroom duplexes and and three-bedroom single family houses. There will be a central “farmhouse” with offices for the community, which also being called Penrose Village II, according to the ACC.
The ACC is the primary service provider for the development, which is aimed at helping the local homeless population, as well as those who are disabled or have been victims of domestic violence.
The first unit will be done and ready for move-in by the end of this month. The entire complex is expected to be compete by the end of fall.
Future tenants will be able to use vouchers to use 30 percent of their income as rent. Individuals can qualify for housing in Penrose Village II if their income is 30 to 50 percent of Wayne County’s median income. Other criteria for homelessness or special needs can also be met.
“The creation of Penrose Village II is a major part of the ACC’s plan to bring the Seven Mile area back to its former glory,” Bob Ghannam, Director of Special Projects at the ACC, said in a statement. “Not only will those in need be able to afford new housing, they also will have easy access to many social services that can help them improve their lives.”
