Palestinian advocate Diana Buttu and Reverend and General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches Edwin Makue will address the Detroit Arab American community at a banquet sponsored by the Palestine Office-Michigan on Thursday, November 13th. The event will take place at the Byblos Banquet Center, 7258 Chase Road, Dearborn, Michigan.
Attorney Buttu was involved in litigations at the International Court of Justice in the Hague resulting in the landmark ruling against Israel’s Apartheid Wall. Reverend Makue was a member of the Election Monitoring delegation during the 2005 elections in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. “Separate is Never Equal” is the topic of their lecture treating the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians.
“This is a landmark opportunity for our community to host this event.” said Hasan Newash, Director of the Palestine Office-Michigan. He went on to say, “This is a must attend event for all peace and justice activists in Metropolitan Detroit and Michigan at large.”
Diana Buttu, a Palestinian Lawyer from Canada, worked with the Palestinian Negotiations Support Unit during the second Intifada, and since then has labored extensively to influence the way the situation in Palestine and Israel is depicted by the media. Ms. Buttu was also involved in litigation at the International Court of Justice in the Hague, which resulted in their landmark opinion against Israel’s wall. While Diana Buttu is no longer employed in Ramallah, she continues to work for justice for Palestinians, and also works with PalTel on sustainable agricultural development and teaches at Birzeit University in Palestine.
Rev. Eddie Makue has been a civil rights advocate in South Africa since 1982. After the dismantling of the Apartheid state, Rev. Makue founded the Independent Forum on Electoral Education in 1992, the Democracy Education and Lobbying Forum in 1994, and the South African Civil Society Election Observation Coalition in 1998. In 2005 Rev. Makue put his electoral experience to work as a member of an election monitoring delegation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In 2006, Rev. Makue was appointed to his current position, General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches.
The event is presented by the Palestine Office and the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and endorsed by the Congress of Arab American Organizations of Michigan (CAAO).
